Rain Delays Daytona Busch Race As Ambrose Qualifies 18th

Winn Dixie 250, Daytona International Speedway, Florida

07 July 2007

Race rescheduled for 11:00pm Saturday evening Australian time, delayed telecast on Fox Sports 3 at 4:00am Sunday morning.

Marcos Ambrose will start 18th in the Winn Dixie 250 after rain at Daytona International Speedway postponed the race until tomorrow morning in Daytona Beach, Florida.

The 19th race in the 2007 NASCAR Busch Series, originally scheduled to start at 8:00pm US Eastern time on Friday 6 July 2007, will now begin at 9:00am US Eastern time on Saturday 7 July 2007 (11:00pm Australian Eastern time Saturday 7 July 2007).

Rain began to fall on the 2.5-mile superspeedway at 6:15pm local time, first cancelling NASCAR Nextel Cup qualifying for the Pepsi 400, then over two hours later, forcing officials to postpone the NASCAR Busch Series race.

Ambrose will start alongside fellow NASCAR international Juan Pablo Montoya on the ninth row in 18th position. Qualifying was held earlier today, before rain descended over Daytona Beach, Florida.

Set-up will now prove a challenge for drivers and teams, as the substantial rain has now washed the racing surface clean of rubber and transformed track conditions.

“This could be the earliest start to a race for me since I raced karts as a kid back in Australia,” said Ambrose.

“It’s always frustrating as a driver to be sitting around watching the rain and just waiting. In the end the rain was too much so we will start this race early tomorrow morning.

“We’ve qualified pretty well. It’s not crucial to be up there for the start of a superspeedway race but we are in the front half of the pack and in a position to run well and make a sensible start.

“The track has had all the rubber washed away so that will change things. I’ll have to sit down with my crew chief Greg Conner and our team and look at what we will need to do to the car set-up now that the track has changed.

“Fingers crossed the rain is not still here when we wake up bright and early tomorrow morning.”
