Ambrose Endures an Early End in Dover

Helluva Good 200, NASCAR Nationwide Series, Dover International Raceway

01 Jun 2008

Marcos Ambrose was forced to endure an early end during his campaign in the Helluva Good 200, race 14 in the NASCAR Nationwide Series, at the Dover International Raceway today.

After qualifying 12th fastest aboard the #59 Kingsford Hickory Ford Fusion earlier in the day Ambrose held his own during the opening section of the 200-lap race, which was delayed by over three hours due to inclement weather.

Unfortunately a slow pit stop during the first caution period of the race dropped Ambrose ten spots down the order and he was placed just outside the top 20 when the race resumed.

Determined to fight back over the remainder of the race Ambrose was engaged in a battle with 2007 Indy Racing League Champion Dario Franchitti during the mid section of the race as the pair clawed their way up the order.

By lap 120 the two-time Australian V8 Supercar Champion had worked his way up to be back inside the top 20, and in a position to capitalise on the Aaron’s Lucky Dog Award, whilst putting in some very competitive lap times.

Unfortunately for Ambrose his solid run came to an abrupt end on lap 154 when his car suffered a flat right front tyre forcing it to make heavy contact with the SAFER barrier. The impact caused significant damage to the front right corner of Ambrose’s car and sidelined him for the remainder of the race.

Denny Hamlin won today’s Helluva Good 200 ahead of Carl Edwards and David Stremme.

After 14 races in the 35-race schedule for 2008 Clint Bowyer leads the NASCAR Nationwide Series points standings on 2028 points ahead of Kyle Busch (1907) and Edwards (1884). Ambrose is 15th on 1443 points.

QUOTES – Marcos Ambrose

“It was just one of those days, we had some decent speed but things didn’t quite fall our way,” said Ambrose.

“We just blew a right front. We were the lucky dog fighting hard there with Dario having a great time. But it wasn’t lucky for the Kingsford car.

“We were in the lucky dog spot looking pretty good, but just got too tight and blew a right front.”
