Ambrose Crashed out on Verge of Top 10 Run at Pocono

04 August 2009

Marcos Ambrose has enjoyed another strong run in the 2009 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, only to be crashed out in the final stages of the Sunoco Red Cross Pennsylvania 500 at Pocono Raceway in Long Pond, Pennsylvannia today.

Debuting an iRacing.com livery on the #47 entry of JTG Daugherty Racing, Ambrose turned in his second strong showing at the 2.5-mile speedway this season, having finished sixth in his Pocono debut earlier this season.

With rain ‘washing out’ qualifying, Ambrose started from 18th position as the field was set by Sprint Cup Owner’s Points and after a steady start, Ambrose looked to be set for a strong finish when he was in ninth place with 25 laps remaining.

As part of his strong run today, Ambrose led his first ever lap in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, taking the lead on lap 93 as part of a pit stop cycle, giving the Australian five bonus points as a result of leading a lap.

On lap 174, Ambrose was an innocent victim of a clash between eventual race winner Denny Hamlin and Ambrose’s Michael Waltrip Racing ‘stablemate’ David Reutimann.

Hamlin hit Reutimann from behind as the trio exited Turn 4, turning Reutimann’s #00 car sideways and straight into the side of Ambrose’s #47 iRacing.com-backed entry.

Ambrose’s car was severely damaged by both the contact with Reutimann as well as the subsequent impact with the inside front straight wall.

He was able to complete further laps with his damaged car to maximise his points score today, eventually classified eight laps down in 34th position.

Ambrose maintains 18th place in the 2009 Sprint Cup Series standings heading into the Watkins Glen road course races this weekend.

What Marcos Had to Say

“Not sure what happened there,” said Ambrose.

“We were running in the top-10 and all of a sudden David (Reutimann) got turned by the 11 (Denny Hamlin) car and I had nowhere to go.

“That pretty much ended our day.”
