Ambrose Holds Points Position With 23rd in Atlanta

07 September 2009

Marcos Ambrose continues to sit in a commendable 17th place in the 2009 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series standings after finishing 23rd in the Pep Boys Auto 500 at Atlanta Motor Speedway in Hampton, Georgia today.

Ambrose started from 11th position in the #47 Clorox-backed entry of JTG Daugherty Racing, running in the mid-pack all day.

While Ambrose was able to run on the lead lap for much of today’s 325-lap race, he ended the night as the second car one lap down at the fast 1.5-mile speedway.

Outlining the consistency shown in Ambrose’s first full season in the top flight Sprint Cup Series, this is the 33-year-old’s 18th top 25 finish from 25 races so far this season.

Kasey Kahne won the Pep Boys Auto 500 ahead of Kevin Harvick and Juan Pablo Montoya.

Ambrose will be back in action for another night race next weekend at Richmond International Raceway, the final race before the field is set for the 2009 Chase for the Sprint Cup.

Ambrose was still mathematically in contention for ‘The Chase’ until the finish of tonight’s race, but still clearly remains the highst-placed first year driver in the 2009 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series.

What Marcos Had to Say

“We hung in there and had a reasonable night,” said Ambrose.

“This race is really tough and there were times there where we had good car speed and were moving forward and there were times where we struggled.

“In the end we just really used our right rear tyre too much. The surface here is old and abrasive and if you’re car isn’t right you can really tear up the rear (tyre).

“We did it tough for a lot of the night with our Clorox car and just couldn’t get a handle on it, but we were not the only ones.

“I guess there are about as many cars in front of us as behind us, but we are looking at top 10s now so we’d like to do better.

“We never gave up and did get some direction out there, so we’ll be back at it again at Richmond.”
