Bigpond 400, Queensland Raceway, Practice Report
21 July 2006
Caltex Racing’s Russell Ingall and JELD-WEN Motorsport’s James Courtney were steady in practice today finishing the two-and-a-half hour session in 13th and 14th position respectively.
Courtney lost most of the first session to a minor engine problem but got back on the track to punch in some consistent times to put him inside the top ten. He dropped down the order towards the end of the session as the team decided to save his new tyres for tomorrow.
Ingall spent much of the session at the pointy end, but slipped out of the top ten with five minutes to go. Having used his full allocation of 40 laps he was unable to head back out for a final run.
Russell Ingall, Caltex Racing
“With Queensland Raceway being SBR’s test track, we have plenty of information and circuit data already. We used today’s two-hour session to test more unique set ups looking for further gains.
“In this game, you have to try new parts and components all the time to look for that bit extra.
“We are not overly worried about today’s result. We will revert back to a more usual set up for qualifying tomorrow.”
James Courtney, JELD-WEN Motorsport
“We were hindered with some engine problems throughout the session today. We had virtually no running in the first hour.
“Knowing the track, I was really keen to get straight into it so it hasn’t started quite how we wanted it.
“But we had a couple of positives from today; we are in the top 50% for qualifying and we didn’t use any new tyres today so we have three sets for tomorrow.”
Ross Stone, Team Manager, Stone Brothers Racing
“We lost some time with the JELD-WEN Motorsport Falcon today as we sorted out a minor engine issue. Despite this the car is really strong; I expect that James would be one of the only ones in the top 15 that didn’t run new tyres today.
“Russell did run new tyres but we only had a small improvement so we will review that tonight.
“I have no doubt that the cars are really strong for the race but we are still really aware that we need to have a good qualifying session to put us in the box seat for race one so we will be working hard to achieve that.”
