Moorabbin Reserve Demolition Begins

14 Jan 2009

Demolition commenced on the grandstands at Linen House Oval Moorabbin, the home of the Saints since 1965. The Club recently signed an agreement with Kingston City Council that will see parts of the Moorabbin reserve opened up for the local community to use and enjoy as the Saints prepare for their move to Seaford in 2010 and their New Elite Training and Administration facility to be built in a partnership with Frankston City Council, The Brumby State Government and the AFL.

Demolition work is well underway on the southern end of the grandstand and terraces with the balance of works expected to be completed over the next few weeks. Repair and refurbishment work is also being completed on the GG Huggins Stand building which will remain to house the Saints Social Club, Merchandise Shop, administration offices and football department which is in the process of moving buildings. The Club has an existing lease in place at Moorabbin Reserve until 2040.

St Kilda Football Club CEO Archie Fraser said, “It’s sad and pleasing at the same time, sad to watch the stands come down, sad in that this was the home of our premiership team who moved here in 1965 to a state of the art ground and then secured our first Flag in 1966. It's pleasing to know that there are some amazing memories that our players, members and supporters have from some great years at Moorabbin that will live with them forever. Moorabbin was a wonderful and emotional part in the history of our Club. It’s also pleasing to see the progress that is now being made as we prepare for our move to a new state of the art facility at Seaford in Frankston in 2010.

“The project here at Moorabbin would not have been possible without the significant support from Minister James Merlino, local member Rob Hudson and the Brumby Government and the cooperation of the new Kingston City Council and I wish to thank both parties for their contributions and the manner in which they have worked alongside the Club to achieve what will be a significant benefit and positive outcome for the local community.”

The St Kilda Football Club is in the process of creating a number of historical memorabilia pieces that will allow fans to treasure a piece of Moorabbin forever. Stay tuned to www.saints.com.au for more information in the coming weeks.
