St Kilda’s Fixture Revealed

The AFL today announced the 2010 fixture in Melbourne, outlining the path that clubs will need to navigate throughout next year’s home and away season.

The Saints will do battle with the Swans in their season opener for the third consecutive year. The Round 1 night clash is set to take place on Saturday March 27 at ANZ Stadium.

St Kilda has beaten the Swans by 2 and 15 points respectively in the past two season openers and it will be a tough opener for our boys.

Three successive home matches then take place against North Melbourne, Collingwood and Fremantle before a road trip to take on Port Adelaide. It’s the first of two trips to Adelaide for the year with a potentially crucial match against the Crows looming large in Round 22.

All up, St Kilda travels interstate six times throughout the year; Adelaide twice, Perth twice as well as trips to Sydney and Brisbane. The second trip to Subiaco is followed by a week off in the AFL’s split round to give the players adequate time to recover and prepare before the much anticipated Grand Final rematch against Geelong at the MCG in Round 13.

This MCG blockbuster is a St Kilda home game and scheduled to be played on Friday June 25 and is the only time the teams are scheduled to meet in the home and away season.

St Kilda CEO Michael Nettlefold said, “Clearly there is demand for Saints footy and we are very pleased this has been reflected in next year’s fixture.

“We believe the considerable shift to six Friday night games is appropriate recognition of the performance of the team in making the preliminary final in 2008 and the grand final in 2009.”

Key points for the Saints in the 2010 home & away fixture are:

14 of 22 games to be played at Etihad Stadium
A run of five consecutive games to be played at Etihad Stadium between Rounds 17-21
Six Friday night matches
Six Saturday afternoon/night matches
16 night matches
A blockbuster Grand Final home rematch against Geelong in Round 13
A Monday night home game against Carlton in Round 7 (Mother’s Day Round)
Two games to be played at the MCG
