SAINTS coach Ross Lyon says Sunday’s 94-point demolition of Port Adelaide does not signal a complete turnaround in their form and believes there are still key areas the players need to improve in.
Despite the Saints’ utter dominance against the rebuilding Power outfit, Lyon left Etihad Stadium with a list of things to work on over the next three weeks.
“I’ll walk away saying it was improved, but there are still things I remember throughout the course of the game we had to address and keep addressing, (like) organisation and communication,” he said.
“In tighter games, they will cost you, but they got wallpapered over a little bit today because of the amount of scoreboard luxury we had.
“There’s plenty of things to work on. It hasn’t been a magic 360 [degree turn] here.
“We understand squarely where we’re at and we need to improve.
“Richmond, if you drew a form line, they’re right up the top ... ladder positions mean nothing. We’ve got a lot to work on.”
Lyon was pleased with the 23 goals the Saints kicked and the fact they came from 13 individual contributors, after the side had become somewhat Nick Riewoldt-focused since the star forward’s return.
He said the much-improved effort came after a mini-review of their game plan during the week, following their heavy loss to Essendon.
“It was like a pre-season week - we went through A to Z, footage, walk-throughs, cones, trained, spoke, evaluated training and prepared for the opposition,” he said.
“It just gave us the bigger picture and we just saw the gaps. It was all theory until we rolled up today, but we saw the gaps in our model and fortunately we were able to bring what we worked on during the week to life.
“It was certainly a step forward and I think we go forward with some optimism into next week against a quality opponent.”
Lyon said a “meaningful” week, that focused on the players’ competitiveness, ball use and pressure, led to Sunday’s result.
“There were much improved mechanics of our game,” he said.
“It looked more like the St Kilda football team we’ve come to know over the last year and a half.”
Michael Gardiner came off with a tightened hamstring and will be scanned this week, although Lyon says they will plan for him to face North Melbourne next Sunday.
